Frances Thompson Library Open Computer Lab
OVERVIEW
The Windows 10 workstations on all three floors offer a full set of ITS lab applications. You will also find six (6) iMacs with the same software as all of the other iMac equipped ITS labs. Users may also access the Thompson Library’s homepage and its resources from these computers. Networked printing is located on each floor. These workstations help students make optimum use of both ITS software and library resources—including library staff.
The workstations, located in the center rows of carrels running north-south on each floor, offer considerable privacy, and should prove attractive places for students to work on term papers and other assignments requiring sustained concentration. There is also a group project room equiped with eleven (11) VDI computers located on the third floor in room 318. UM-Flint faculty and staff may also use the workstations.
Hours of Operation
Lab hours are the same as the Library Hours
But of course, though Open Labs try to keep the computer in the keyboard hidden, it has all the expandability and software open-endedness of a computer. So while you may prefer working in the shell environment, don't forget that any Windows-compatible software can be installed at a later date and accessed from within that shell. Open Labs has introduced the Touch Laptop – a mobile Windows computer optimized for music production. The laptop is one of the results of Open Labs’ collaboration with Dell and features Intel Sandy Bridge processors, DDR3 memory and a 14″ Multi-Touch Screen.
